Salinas Missions 2.0

Like my previous entry, I've painted this image before (over a year ago) but it has really stuck with me. I love the stark separation of the shadow and highlights and how they are connected as a continuous shape. My first attempt was 8"x 8" and I felt like a larger treatment was in order. I also was not satisfied with how the shadow areas turned out the first time around. I'm much happier with this one. Note: this piece has been accepted in the 2013 Salon International Exhibition at the Greenhouse Gallery in San Antonio, Texas.


It reads easily as a black and white value statement.

    Hi Larry, just wanted to say how much I admire your paintings! They are beautiful! There are so many great artists in the US and your work is one that made me say as I was looking at them, "Oh, Oh, I love that one, Oh, and that one as well", and so on. I'm a pastel artist in Prescott, AZ and it seems I can do animals, objects, etc, but have a few problems with landscapes. So your work is very inspiring and makes me want to try harder!

    Thanks Michele. Each type of painting: still life, figurative, wildlife or landscape takes getting used to. You live in a beautiful place to learn! I recommend painting from life and finding other local artists to paint with. best of luck!
